![]() ![]() We stopped about halfway at a home converted to an open style restaurant and had breakfast. I did feel that my horse did not like to the stony path that we were on but they are well trained. The horses were carefully selected to match their riders' abilities and age. We did the horseback ride to the falls so the staff was kind enough to ride us down in their truck. You walk down a very steep slope from the office to the horses or the truck ride. He was wonderful!! It was about a 45 minute drive from our location between Quepos and Manuel Antonio. They recommended a driver who gave us the name of the driver we used, Deiner Cascante Umana. We had to find a driver to deliver us to the Nauyaca Waterfalls office because they do not offer a pick up service. Our party of 5 (oldest being age 72) voted this as our favorite activity. Also, there are several trails near the falls, which we didn’t take, so definitely save your energy for those and forego the 2.7 km walk in. Look into that if you are into more adventure! I gave this a 3 star for the misleading hike information, but the falls are definitely a 5. Take option 1 - catch a ride both ways to the rancho, factor in the heat when evaluating your abilities, wear appropriate footwear, bring snacks or a lunch, and refill your water water bottle at every opportunity! Now for the good stuff: The falls are stunning and The cool water of the pools never felt so amazing after the hike! We saw people who came in with guides, offering to climb up the falls and jump. Bottom line is the information is misleading. Granted we were drenched by the time we tackled the steps, but plan on 30 minutes to the lower falls. NO WAY! The trail is a series of steep man-made steps with ropes along the side. From the rancho it is stated as a 10 minute walk. It was tough! We are usually easily able to walk this distance without trouble, and we were wearing good hiking shoes, which should be listed as a requirement. We overestimated our ability to walk this distance in the high heat and humidity. The walk to the rancho is on often steep, gravel road, in the sun. ![]() We chose option 2 to walk from the entrance, advertised as a 45 minute, 2.7 km walk, mostly downhill to the rancho, and then a 10 minute walk to the falls. (I don’t think the upper falls are accessible for swimming from the first entrance). We really enjoyed the falls and could swim in both the upper and lower falls from the Nature Park. They drive you both ways on demand so we could stay as long or as short as we wanted (the first entrance has you on a schedule). By contrast, the entrance at the Nature Park was quiet and calm and had way way way fewer people. When we drove past the first entrance it was super crowded and looked like pure chaos. The extra drive was just beautiful, and the gravel road was wide and in really good condition. The waterfall is beautiful from either direction but we are really glad we chose the Nature Park. This listing is for the Nature Park which requires driving an additional 15 km or so past the first entrance, including driving 6.4 km along a gravel road. Any review here that talks about these options (horse, Jeep) or has photos from the right side of the waterfall is the OTHER entrance. Nauyaca Waterfqll is the first entrance along the road, and offers the hike or horse or 4x4 jeep experience. US$80 per person for the horseback riding and the Premium 4×4 tours (with a bilingual guide and lunch included).Readers should realize there are two entrances to this waterfall, one from each side. US$10 per person for the hike (no guiding possible). You could simply hike (preferably from the car park area located downhill: expect around 1-1.5 hours’ walk one way, on a well-maintained path), or you could enjoy a horseback riding tour or take a premium ride on a 4×4 to the top of the waterfalls. To get there, several options are available to you. Undoubtedly some of the biggest and the most beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica, the main one is a spectacular 150 feet high while the second waterfall is a stunning 65 feet.ĭon’t forget your bathing suit as you can take a dip in the natural pool and dive from the boulders surrounding the falls. Have you ever dreamed of discovering huge waterfalls nestled in the heart of the jungle flowing down to a natural pool where you could dive in? Well then, you’ve just discovered Nauyaca Waterfalls.
